The CMU MRSEC is sponsored primarily by the National Science Foundation through it Materials Research Science and Engineering Center's program. The CMU MRSEC is one of a national network of university-based Centers in materials research that maintains an umbrella web site at www.mrsec.org.

The Center is based the The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE). The MSE department is part the the Engineering College, which is known as Carnegie Institute of Technology (CIT). CIT is one of the colleges of Carnegie Mellon. Carnegie Mellon is located in Pittsburgh, PA.
